Why endometriosis takes so long to diagnose
Endometriosis is common, but getting a diagnosis often takes years. Symptoms overlap with other conditions, period pain is too often treated as normal, and standard scans can look normal even when endometriosis is present. A clear, well-documented history is one of the most useful things you can take to a referral.
Laparoscopy remains the definitive way to confirm endometriosis, although ultrasound or MRI performed by specialists can identify some forms. The clinician will explain what each investigation can and cannot show.
