How a child autism assessment works
There is no single test for autism. A diagnosis is reached by building a full picture of your child's development: early communication, play, relationships, routines, interests and sensory experiences, and how these show up at home and at school.
The clinician takes a detailed developmental history with you, observes your child in a way suited to their age, and gathers information from nursery or school. They also consider other explanations and conditions that can occur alongside autism, such as ADHD, language disorders or anxiety.
Girls and children who cope well on the surface are sometimes identified later. If you have a persistent sense that something is different, that is worth taking seriously, even if others have not noticed it yet.
After the assessment
The report sets out the outcome and the reasoning in plain language, with recommendations that schools and local authorities can act on. It can be used as evidence in an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) request, although the decision on an EHCP always rests with the local authority.
