A diagnosis is a starting point, not an end point. What happens next depends on the individual, the diagnosis, and personal preference, but common next steps include a shareable written report for school, work or insurance purposes, a conversation with your clinician about whether medication is appropriate, in the case of ADHD, structured coaching focused on executive function and daily strategies, and requesting reasonable adjustments at work or in education where relevant.
Ongoing review matters
For conditions like ADHD where medication may be part of the plan, regular review with your prescribing clinician is important to monitor response and any side effects. For autism, ongoing support is more often about environment and strategy than medication, though co-occurring conditions such as anxiety are sometimes treated separately.
Telling other people
Whether and how to share a diagnosis with an employer, school or family member is a personal decision, not an obligation. A report can sit unused until you decide it is useful, for example if you later want to request a workplace adjustment or exam accommodation. There is no default requirement to disclose a diagnosis to anyone.
If your first plan doesn't work
Medication response, coaching fit and useful adjustments often take some trial and adjustment to get right. A single unhelpful first attempt at a strategy is common and does not mean the diagnosis was wrong or that nothing will help; it usually means the plan needs a review with your clinician, not abandonment.
